Birthright – See Birth In A Totally Different Way
A new online tutorial has recently been made available on the internet. Its called “Birthright”. It’s an online child birth education tutorial which prepares women in a new and thorough way for their baby’s birth. What follows is an interview with “Birthright’s” creator.
INTERVIEWER: Why did you decide to create Birthright?
Catherine: I have two children and had the best possible birth experiences I could imagine. They were intervention-free and I experienced no pain. I attribute these easy births to my preparation beforehand and to understanding how to work with my body, not against. I wanted to share what I knew to be true with other women.
INTERVIEWER: How does the Birthright tutorial work?
Catherine: The lessons are delivered via email in sequence from lesson 1-14. The course is cumulative, meaning that the lessons build upon each other. This is how the 14 Birthright lessons are laid out:
I. Dissecting Pain in Childbirth
II. How Perception Affects Childbirth
III. Breaking the Chain: Changing Your Perceptions About Childbirth
IV. Removing Barriers to Birthing
V. Intervention Analysis: Understanding Interventions in Birthing
VI. Interventions for the Baby
VII. Prevention & Management of Discomfort in Birthing
VIII. Birth Positions
IX. Natural Comfort Measures
X. Stages of Birthing & Management Strategies
XI. For the Birth Companion
XII. Signs of Birthing
XIII. Due Dates, Post Dates & Induction
XIV. Meconium Happens: Handling Complications in Birthing
INTERVIEWER: What’s your definition of success once a student has completed your course?
Catherine: My definition of success is that students will become informed consumers who understand their birth choices, understand the risks/benefits to birth practices, and make their own informed consent in terms of their desires for their own birth. They will understand how their actions and perceptions are directly related to the birth experience they will have and how to employ natural methods to ensure a smoother, easier birth. They will view birth without fear and will have the necessary tools to enter their birthing mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared. They will also understand how to prevent common complications and be better equipped to deal with complications should they arise.
INTERVIEWER: What are your credentials?
Catherine: I am a birth worker and provide birth support and education through my website. My information comes from a review of the literature, interviews with midwives, mother and my own experience. Sadly, little true information on birth can be gained from doctors as their training in normal birth is compromised and quite limited. I have also completed childbirth education classes myself when pregnant and have taken Hypnobirthing training as well as Hypnobabies home study in addition to regular hospital classes.
INTERVIEWER: How long did it take you to create the Birthright tutorial?
Catherine: Birthright is the culmination of 6 years of research and training in natural, normal birth and evidence-based birth practices. I have been reading and reviewing the medical literature since 2001, interviewing other mothers, providing birth support, and connecting with other natural birth supporters both on and offline in that time. The actual writing of the course started about two months ago as I organized and assembled each lesson. I worked on the course each day for two months. Birthright covers the main topics that every pregnant woman should know before her birthing.
INTERVIEWER: In closing, not only is it obvious that Birthright is an excellent teaching tool for mother’s to be but also for expectant father’s as well. Surely the more educated about the total birthing experience a father to be is, the less stress he will experience in the delivery room as both mother and father work in partnership to birth their beautiful baby.
