Book Review: The Wisdom Of Healing
The Wisdom of Healing is a comprehensive guide to the ancient Indian tradition of mind-body medicine known as Ayurveda. Divided into three sections, the first explores the importance of mental well being on physical health and shows how illness can be treated on many levels from the removal of a tumour to the subtle restoration of natural balance. The second portion provides insight into the range of Ayurvedic treatments, including food as medicine, the wisdom of herbs, restful alertness to reduce stress, detoxification, purification and rejuvenation. In the third section, the author describes how to treat certain disorders the mind-body way, including digestive problems, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, fatigue and chronic pain – as well as strategies for managing ageing and fully experiencing death. The new model for health offered in this book embraces the best of the objective, scientific interventions of Western medicine with the subjective, holistic approaches of the ancient healing traditions. It empowers and honors the inherent healing power within us all, acknowledging the imperishable linkage between body, mind, and spirit. Health is then understood as the return of the memory of wholeness. Healing is a lifelong process of unfolding, without clear beginnings and with no anticipated end.
