5. Margarine with Trans Fats ““ Scientific Research has vilified trans fats (hydrogenated man made fat). You will find trans fats in many processed foods. REPLACEMENTS: olive oil or margarine with no trans fats ““ must say it on the label.
4. Processed Baked Goods ““ this stuff is just fluff. Snack cakes, bakery cakes, and white bread ““ most of these products are made with refined white flour and contain trans fats. REPLACEMENTS: whole grain breads ““ it’s easy to find pre-made breads made with whole grains. It may be difficult to find pre-made cakes and cookies made with whole grains. However, consider homemade - Smart Cookies: 80 Recipes for Heavenly, Healthful Snacking (Jane Kinderlehrer Smart Food Series) ““ an excellent cookie book using healthful ingredients.
3. Chips and Snack Foods ““ Again, processed foods are not healthful. Anything fried in oil is not healthful. REPLACEMENTS: There are several varieties of low-fat smart snack foods available. Popcorn and rice cakes are also some of your better choices. But try to get away from processed foods of any sort. Celery, carrots, cucumbers and other vegetables and fruits are much better for you.
2. French Fries, Doughnuts, and other deep fried foods ““ Even polyunsaturated oils like canola, soybean, safflower, corn, and other seed and nut oils can become damaged when exposed to either oxygen or high heat. Foods cooked in highly heated oils can cause cancer, aging, weight gain and other serious health risks if ingested on a regular basis. REPLACEMENTS: instead of deep fried foods choose broiled or baked options.
1. Soda ““ Soda in any form, whether sugared or diet is just not a good idea. A twelve-ounce can of soda can contain up to ten teaspoons of sugar. Now that’s just gross. If you normally drink one soda a day worth 150 calories and you replace that with a glass of water, you can lose up to 15 pounds in a year. Remember that diet sodas may also be harmful. The jury is still out on whether Aspartame is a safe product. A general rule of thumb is that any man-made, chemical product should probably not be ingested. REPLACEMENTS: water, milk, decaf coffee and tea.
Just one disclaimer for this article. If you are concerned about any processed foods that you have been ingesting on a regular basis, you should consult your own health care practitioner. I cannot tell you what is right for your body… you and your doctor must decide what is right for your specific case.

Scientists armed with a mounting body of evidence and research from across the world are waging war on what they claim is the biggest killer in the West–an overly acidic body. The theory goes that whenever the body burns fuel it creates acidic toxins as a by-product. Many scientists now believe that high build-ups of these acid wastes can be a primary cause of chronic disease, overweight and aging. Live longer by following these six simple tips to re-balance your body’s acid-alkaline levels (”pH”): Live Longer Checklist –Drink ionized alkaline water –Eat an acid-neutralizing diet –Exercise –Reduce stress –Stop smoking –Drink during air travel HEALTH BENEFITS OF ALKALINE DRINKING WATER AND DIET Various studies reveal that a balanced body pH has been shown to: –Reduce heart disease in a town in Finland by 22% –Reduce insulin dependence in North American type 1 diabetes patients by 83% –Reduce arthritis pain, linked to chronic build-up of uric acid –Reduce risk of cancer (cancer cells flourish in an acidic environment) –Slow the aging process. Aging starts when the body stops getting rid of internally generated wastes and toxins. Studies and research suggest that even mild acid-waste build-up can cause: –Cardiovascular damage, including the constriction of blood vessels and the reduction of oxygen — so important for healthy cells –Weight gain, obesity and diabetes –Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones –Immune deficiency –Accleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations –Hormone concerns –Premature aging –Osteoporosis: weak, brittle bones, hip fractures and bone spurs –Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid build-up –Low energy and chronic fatigue –Slow digestion and elimination –Yeast / fungal overgrowth TIP 1 - DRINK ALKALINE WATER Each cell in your body can only function as well as the fluid it is surrounded by — like a fish in a bowl. So the cleaner and less acidic the liquids in your body are, the healthier you’re likely to be. Considering that the body eliminates acidic waste through body liquids in four different ways — respiration, urination, perspiration or defecation, the key to good health means: –Drink enough of the right type of water to hydrate the body properly –Drink ionized alkaline water — studies show it’s twice as effective in flushing out acid toxins as bottled or filtered water –As you get older, total water to body ratio decreases, making elimination harder. So you need to drink more. –Same thing goes for when it’s hot. Drink more. TIP 2 — DIET Changing your diet can significantly reduce the level of acidity in your body. But if you can’t cut out acid-producing foods, it’s even more important to drink alkaline water. Eat more of these foods that neutralize acidity in the body: –Leafy greens and most veggies –Most fruits including citrus –Polyunsaturated fats found in seed oils (flax and hemp), fatty fish (seabass, tuna, mackeral, trout, salmon), coconut milk and avocado –Okay proteins include chicken breast, tofu, and many seeds Eat fewer acid-producing foods like: –Animal protein (beef, chicken, pork and eggs) –Dairy products –Vinegar –Soy sauce –Mushrooms –Corn –Sugar –Alcohol –Coffee –Peanuts –Pasta TIP 3 — EXERCISE Being overweight has nothing to do with fats or calories, according to some authors like Dr. Robert Young, author of the pH Miracle for Weight Loss. He believes putting on weight can be traced to a build-up of acid waste — if it isn’t eliminated, it parks on your hips, buttocks and elsewhere, so you get fat. Try the following instead: –Exercise makes you sweat and breathe harder — both processes eliminate toxins. –Saunas also make you sweat. Take one often. –Don’t over-exercise. This causes a build-up of lactic acid that the body can’t eliminate, so it’s deposited as fatty tissue. TIP 4 — DON’T STRESS –Relax. Anger and hostility have been shown to increase stomach acidity, which can lead to peptic and stress ulcers, or ulcerative colitis. TIP 5 — STOP SMOKING –Smoking also increase stomach acidity –If you do smoke, the more acidic your body, the stronger your nicotine craving will be. TIP 6 — DRINK DURING AIR TRAVEL The air inside airplane cabins is super-dry (less relative humidity than the Sahara desert), and can result in extreme dehydration, increased acidity and jet-lag. –Drink at least 8 oz (quarter liter) of water for every hour you fly, especially long-haul frequent flyers.

Is Nutrition Really Important?

In light of recent films like “What the Bleep Do We Know?”? and a collective surge in awareness of Energy therapies and theories, the one question that clients repeatedly ask me in my coaching practice is, “Is nutrition really that important?”?

My short answer is that, yes, it’s all important. The Modality of the body is not any less or more important than any of the other Modalities.

The longer answer is that when you take care of the physical, you send a message to the Higher Self, sometimes referred to as the Observer, that you are willing to take care of your Self; that you appreciate this physical manifestation of the spirit or Energy realm. That, in turn, puts energy in motion. It’s self-nurturing on a symbolic level. Everything physical is symbolic of the spiritual realm. So, you symbolically nurture the spirit by taking optimal care of the body.

When clients become lackadaisical in their efforts to maintain optimum health, instead focusing almost exclusively on spiritual or emotional health, their physical health inevitably begins to decline. This, in turn affects their emotional health, and begins the cycle of an overall decline in total health. Each Modality is intricately interwoven and interconnected with the others. Any change, whether perceived to be large or small in one Modality, has a resounding impact on all.

Each Modality has octopus-like tentacles reaching into the other four Modalities, changing and altering their fundamental state based on how optimally you are functioning at any given time. As such, nourishment or negligence of the physical has deep and resonating repercussions in all areas of the Self. This then, has direct and immediate implications on your capacity to actualize your full potential.

Each one of us has the ability to achieve greatness in our lifetime. The only way this is even a remote possibility, is to ensure optimum or peak functioning in each of the Five Modalities. This requires diligence, dedication, and a deep commitment to bring to bear all that you are capable of conceiving.

Admittedly, this is no easy task in a culture that not only breeds mediocrity, but often celebrates it as an accomplishment. Each day, each moment, that we are plugged into our Overarch, is a challenge to the greatness that we are capable of bringing to fruition. Focusing energy, creativity, and thought on our inner lives requires a conscious effort to tear ourselves away from the seductive pull of a consumer-driven world.

We receive and internalize billions of messages every day to look at ourselves from the outside, as opposed to looking out from behind our eyes. We are inundated with media, advertising, and images encouraging us to consume rather than create; to accept rather than challenge. Our profound spiritual connectedness to nature, to one another, to our deeper and higher selves, is replaced with stagnant dogma. None of this is an accident. All of these factors jointly produce the effect of an insatiable soul-hunger; a hunger for which we are then offered material “cures.”?

If we take this very same analogy, and apply it to nutrition, we see that we have a food industry that strips essential vitamins, minerals, fats, and other phytochemical components from plants and produce in their natural forms, and bottles the extracted nutrients to sell separately to the “health food”? industry. The refined foods, once much of the nutritional value has been removed, are then sold to the public at large, sometimes with added sugars or salt, health-eroding trans fats or hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors, colors or other additives and preservatives.

Again, the result is an insatiable hunger, this time in our bodies. Americans are the most overfed, yet undernourished peoples on the planet. Our Overarching culture, at the same time that it removes most of the nutrition in our grains and produce, offers us sugar-coated empty calories to assuage the pangs of deprivation. In much the same way that we lose our sense of a true spiritual connection and replace it with material profit-driven “fixes”?; we are nutritionally starving while stuffing ourselves with synthetic versions of the food that grows naturally in the wild. Nature in the wild that we were meant to have a spiritual, as well as physical connection to.

If our bodies are starving for real nutrition, our minds are not functioning at optimum levels, and our emotions follow suit. This inevitably affects the Spirit Modality, and consequently, the Overarch. The Overarch is our social, political, cultural, geographic, and historical position in the world. It is how we interact with all of these elements, and how they, in turn, interact with us. It is relatively clear how the Overarch impacts us; it is often less clear how we impact our Overarch.

Quite simply, if we take the premise that the micro is the macro, or the personal is the global, we begin to see how we can have a tremendous effect on our Overarch. All that we do on an individual level, in our personal day-to-day lives, is precisely what is happening in the larger, wider world. Take, for example, our overfed and undernourished selves in this part of the world ““one of the most affluent and powerful nations in the world. Add to that a spiritual, or soul-hunger, and a celebration of mediocrity. Consider, too, that the micro is the macro, and that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. With these factors combined, it is not difficult to see why the planet is in its current condition.

It is also not difficult to see why there is a growing surge, a powerful global movement, toward evolution. More and more people are beginning to understand, whether on a conscious level, or a sub-conscious level, that change is an absolute, dire necessity. We all basically want the same things: a deeper connection to a spiritual core, a feeling of being connected to all of life, to manifest our greatness, and actualize our full potential. What we disagree on is how to accomplish these goals.

If you want to realize your greatness, and access you full potential, look to making the connections. And, given the fact that each Modality has deeply embedded roots in all of the others, my response to the question of whether nutrition is really important in the grand scheme of the energy realm is: absolutely.

It is a fact that over half of Americans are overweight. With most of us having busy schedules, it’s not so easy to stick to diets or work out on a regular basis. But, all hope is not lost. The following advice should help you lose those unwanted bounds easily by following a safe diet plan and exercising.

The first piece of advice deals with exercising. Always exercise on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Talk a walk on a treadmill or around the block a few times. Ten minutes will make a difference by burning stored energy ““ namely fat.

The second useful tip is not eating late night snacks. If you avoid snacking three hours before bedtime, you wont be storing fat, and you will be amazed at the results.

Tip number three suggests that if you are going to drink coffee, make it black. Fancy coffee flavored drinks with cream and sugar are loaded with calories, as opposed to zero in a good old cup of black coffee.

Tip four recommends that you eat four or five small meals a day rather than the traditional three. Your metabolism needs constant fuel to burn fat. If you feed it in small amounts several times, your metabolism stays high and burns more calories.

Finally, cut down on your carbohydrate intake. This will make a huge difference in how much and how quickly you will lose weight. Eliminate as much bread and other starches as you can from your diet, and youll see why it works when you step on the scale. Take this advice, and youll see what easy weight loss dieting is all about.

The element magnesium has atomic number 12 and atomic mass number of 24.3. It is present in the third row and the group IIA of the periodic table. It is a normal element, with a valency of 2 and forms the Mg++ cation. It is a silvery white tough metal with a melting point of 923 K or 1202 F.

Naturally it is found in minerals such as marble, limestone, dolomite, kieserite, magnesia, etc. It is the eighth-most abundant element on the crust of the earth, occupying about 2% of it. Magnesium readily reacts with acids forming respective salts. Most of these salts may are hydrated in their natural states.

Several useful alloys are made using magnesium. Duralumin and magnalium are both lightweight, sturdy alloys that are used to make bodies of aircraft and vehicles. Magnesium has pyrotechnic properties and so it is used in making incendiary bombs, flares and signals. In photography, it is used in the manufacture of flash bulbs. Magnesium also has lubricating and binding properties. Owing to this property, it is used to make industrial capsules. Magnesium finds a use in metallurgy as a reducing agent.

Magnesium is a macro element required for the metabolism of the human body. It is the fourth-most abundant element in the human body and about 50% of it is present in the bones. About 1% of magnesium is assimilated in the human blood. Even chlorophyll in plants is a magnesium-poyphyrin complex. Magnesium is a cofactor for various enzymes. A proper balance of magnesium is required to ward off bone related ailments such as osteoporosis and arthritis. It is also required for proper cardiovascular and kidney functions.

Vegetarian foods have higher contents of magnesium. Magnesium is abundantly found in nuts and green vegetables. It is also abundant in diary products such as tofu, cheese, butter, yoghurt, etc.

Magnesium compounds are sold as therapeutic drugs. Milk of magnesia is the commercial name of magnesium hydroxide. It is used as a laxative and antacid. Magnesium oxide or magnesia is also used for the same. Magnesium sulfate is used to reduce labor pains.

Vitamin B12 is a safe, reliable and inexpensive vitamin. For health-conscious individuals, a regular intake of a prescribed amount of vitamin B12 is a key element for preserving a balance in the human body. B12 could be obtained from food sources or could be taken in the form of supplements orally or via injections.

In combination with other B-group vitamins, vitamin B12 ensures the smooth functioning of vital life processes of the human body. It is important for maintaining a healthy nervous system and DNA production. Vitamin B12 helps to regulate the formation of red blood cells in the body. Other benefits of vitamin B12 include its role in maintaining and increasing energy levels in the human body.

Vitamin B12 is highly beneficial in various forms. Methylcobalamin, the coenzyme form of vitamin B12 is a body-friendly version, which means that no metabolic steps are required for its ingestion and it can be used it in its normal form. It is available as a sublingual tablet that dissolves under the tongue (because the digestive system might modify this molecule). Through this method, vitamin B12 can directly penetrate the bloodstream and yield numerous benefits. Hydroxocobalamin is another form of vitamin B12 that has been recognized as an effective cure for cyanide poisoning.

Research studies reveal a clear, inverse correlation between homocysteine (an amino acid found in the human body) levels and vitamin B12 levels. Blocking the formation of homocysteine leads to endothelial dysfunction (a narrowing of the arteries) and is a precursor of atherosclerosis; vitamin B12 helps to curb atherosclerosis. A supplement of vitamin B12 also augments the efficiency of folic acids capacity to lower homocysteine levels. Researchers are of the opinion that in conjunction with folic acid, an adequate dose of vitamin B12 helps to counter heart diseases and thrombosis. The synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a compound involved in immune function and mood, depends on the association of folate and vitamin B12.

Studies indicate that absorption of Vitamin B12 decreases with an increase in age. Hence, an increased intake of vitamin B12 is extremely useful for adults above fifty. The recommended form of intake is in supplement form, since elderly people absorb this form better than food forms of vitamin B12. A supplementation of vitamin B12 aids in the cognitive function and heals neurological impairment within this group.

In most cases, vitamin B12 should be taken in conjunction with a folic acid supplement and a B-Complex vitamin. The good news is that while an intake of vitamin B12 facilitates functions necessary for everyday existence, an extra dose causes no harm but instead could be stored for future use.

I’m always amazed at how many people seem to know the answer to this question yet in practice they fail. Everybody I’ve talked to seems to know that 8-12 glasses of water a day is the recommended standard. But if I ask them how many glasses of water have you consumed today? The answer is usually none. Or the other standard answer at a corporate environment “does coffee count?”?

While 8-12 glasses of water is great for the average sedentary person, many of us are fitness conscious or on the pursuit of some type of bodybuilding physique. With that in mind, I think the new standard for us should be 1-2 gallons of water a day.

As a bodybuilder, you are putting much more nutrients, food, supplements, and other stuff into your body. What your body does not use, it must rid itself of by any means necessary. Usually it does this via water. So drinking plenty of water becomes a necessity. Increasing protein puts a strain on your body and drinking lots of water can keep things “moving.”? Creatine monohydrate supplementation requires a lot of water. Creatine is all about cell volumization. Making sure your cells are completely hydrated helps with the volumization process. NO2, a hemodilator, requires water. Many other supplements require water as a transport and a flushing method.

The side effects of drinking too little water are an excess buildup of certain chemicals. Creatine can leave behind some buildup that overtime, becomes a bit hard to pass. Putting such a strain on the body is also self-defeating. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not just about Creatine and NO2. It’s about making sure you are hydrated.

Being properly hydrated has it’s benefits other then just the flushing methods and cell volumization discussed above. Your state of alertness is affected by your hydration levels. Performance in the gym by a hydrated body is enhanced. Your body is roughly 70% water. It makes sense to hydrate it. Drinking water is not just for hot days. It’s for intense workouts in the gym. In fact, being hydrated has that perpetual pump that is so sought after.

There can be too much of a good thing. Drinking water to excess leads to water intoxication, referred to as hyponatremia. As you consume water, blood plasma increases and dilutes the salt content of the blood. While this is happening, you lose more salt by sweating. Consequently the amount of salt available to the body tissues decreases and over time, the loss interferes with brain, heart and muscle functions. Water intoxication is more commonly found in endurance athletes.

Drink plenty of water per day, but just keep in mind, there can be too much of a good thing. Being properly hydrated is necessary for optimum performance in the gym and for keeping your body performing well.

Colostrum is the milk produced immediately after birth. In cows is it is referred to as bovine colostrum, which is beneficial to children and adults alike.

Bovine colostrum contains components such as immunoglobulins, antibodies, proline-rich polepeptyde, lactoferrin and glycoproteins, which are instrumental in fighting viruses in the human body. Also, the growth factors present in Bovine Colostrum are identical to those of human colostrum. There are over 90 components in bovine colostrum, which are divided into two classes, immune factors and growth factors. These two factors contribute largely in maintaining health for the human beings making bovine colostrum the preferred tonic for a growing number of people all over the world.

Bovine colostrum can rejuvenate your brain, assist generation or improvement of aged muscles, burn fat, assist the internal regulation of blood glucose levels, and repair the body’s DNA and RNA. Also, the vitamins and minerals present in bovine colostrum act as coenzymes, which maintain the chemical process in the body.

Over the years, research has proved that immune and growth factors found in bovine colostrum are nearly identical to that of human colostrum. So, bovine colostrum, more than any other forms of colostrum will be beneficial to human health. Also, there is a misconception that only children can benefit from colostrum. As a matter of fact, as bodies age, they stop producing immune and growth factors that help us fight diseases so there is a real need for colostrum in adults.

Colostrum is a natural food revealing no side effects. No wonder it’s been a favorite of athletes and body builders. Bovine colostrum is best taken in powder form as it gives better results when mixed with saliva. Another important advantage is that it can help the body to utilize the proteins and vitamins obtained form other food to a greater extent.

Bovine colostrum can be the right food for people of every age. But it’s important to consult your physician before taking colostrum.

Calcium and magnesium are two elements that are highly essential for the body. They are mentioned together because they mostly function as a group. Calcium is the most abundant element in the body and is extremely essential for the growth and development of the bones. However it is not very easy for calcium to get absorbed within the body and hence most of it is flushed out. Magnesium is the element that helps calcium to get absorbed within the body.

Calcium and magnesium are retailed together in the form of tablets. Since both of them are better absorbed in the body in their chelated forms, one should look for their citrates, gluconates, aspartates, glycinates or lactates in the ingredients.

When the diet is insufficient in magnesium, calcium does not get absorbed in the blood and bones. Instead, it collects in the soft tissues, leading to arthritic pains. A common misconception was that arthritis is caused due to the deficiency of calcium. It is actually not the deficiency, but the malabsorption of calcium that is the culprit. A diet supplemented with magnesium can remedy the situation by allowing calcium to get absorbed in the blood and the bones.

Osteoporosis, i.e. the softening of long bones, is also caused due to improper absorption of calcium in the body. A diet well-balanced with magnesium can treat conditions of osteoporosis. Magnesium and calcium together can also reduce pain during menstrual cramps and pregnancy in women.

A proper ratio of calcium and magnesium in the body is 2:1. Higher proportion of calcium is required because it has difficulties in getting absorbed in the body. It is advisable to have at least 1000 mg of calcium and 500 mg of magnesium in the daily diet.

There are many natural foods that are rich in both calcium and magnesium. Calcium is present in all dairy foods such as butter, cheese, yoghurt, etc. It is also present in turnips and kelps. Magnesium is found abundantly in nuts such as almonds, cashew nuts and brazil nuts. It is also found in good proportions in buckwheat, brown rice, dandelion greens and corn.

Refined sugar and alcohol interfere directly with the amounts of calcium and magnesium in the body. Both of these substances eliminate more magnesium out of the body in the form of urine. As a result, magnesium is unavailable for the absorption of calcium and its level goes down too. Hence, people suffering from bone related problems must reduce their intake of both refined sugar and alcohol.
