Genital Herpes: A sexually transmitted disease.
Genital Herpes is a disease that is sexually transmitted by the HSV-2 virus. Basic symptoms of this disease include blisters or sores in the genital area. Other symptoms could be pain in legs, buttocks or the genital area. Patients feel a pressure in their abdominal area. Women suffer with the problem of vaginal discharge in this disease.
There are two strains of Herpes Simplex Virus (HPV), the prime cause of this disease. While HSV-1 is responsible for oral herpes, HSV-2 is the cause of genital herpes. People are not able to realize the disease as the symptoms are not profound until late.
When the blisters around genitals or rectums break, they leave behind ulcers or sores.HSV-2 virus is contained in sores, thus when they break it leads to the development of genital herpes in the victim. Sometimes virus is produced from skin whose blisters are yet not broken.
People often don’t realize the symptoms until late. It could be very dangerous if the symptoms are evident in the first outbreak. First outbreak usually occurs within two weeks after the virus is transmitted. This event is also referred to as primary episode. Those affected from the disease for the first time may suffer from 4 to 5 such outbreaks in a year. The sores take 3 to 4 weeks to heal, and with each outbreak the condition of the patient usually improves.
A pregnant woman might pass on genital herpes to her child, largely during the primary attack. The problem could be more complicated if the virus is passed to child through the placenta. Those with less immunity might suffer from extreme pain due to genital herpes.
At present, genital herpes cannot be cured by any medicine, though anti-viral medicines can make the pain less and prevent the outbreaks.
